Cloud and infrastructure: availability and continuity

About this topic

A system’s availability is rarely decided by the server itself. In Cameroon the first cause of downtime is often the power supply, ahead of the Internet link and dependence on a single person. These guides translate the “nines” of availability into real hours of downtime, show how to find your single points of failure, and set out a staged progression: a UPS with clean shutdown, a second link from a different operator, a degraded mode for checkout, then redundancy and tested failover. They also separate three ideas that are constantly confused: high availability, backup and disaster recovery. The aim is simple: put a price on one hour of downtime before investing, rather than choosing a target out of ambition, then measure real availability with outside monitoring and an incident log.
