Cybersecurity: protecting your data and your backups

About this topic

Most data loss is not spectacular: a drive that fails on a Monday morning, a backup disk sitting next to the server, a restore nobody has ever tried. These guides explain how to build protection that holds on the day you need it: agree the RPO and RTO with management, apply the 3-2-1-1-0 rule with one immutable or offline copy, test a restore every quarter, turn on multi-factor authentication, and keep the account that writes backups apart from the one that can delete them. They also describe how current ransomware hunts for backups first, and point to references you can check: NIST, CISA, France’s ANSSI and, in Cameroon, ANTIC. They are written for small and mid-sized businesses without a security team that want to know where to start on a limited budget.
