A Cameroonian SME that wants to “do digital” often starts with a Facebook page and a paid campaign. Six months later it has views, a few messages, and no idea what actually produced a customer.

The problem is not the channel. It is the order. There is a low-cost foundation that produces qualified enquiries, in Douala as well as from Paris or Montreal, and it is built before any advertising. Here it is, in the order it pays off.

1. Your Google profile: being found by people searching right now

For a local business, a complete Google Business Profile is free, appears in Search and Maps, and captures the intent closest to a purchase: someone typing “pharmacie de garde Akwa” or “IT maintenance Yaoundé” right now.

Google says so itself: complete and accurate profiles are more likely to appear in local results, which are ranked by relevance, distance and prominence. A profile that works has:

  • the business’s real name, with no keywords or city added: Google’s guidelines prohibit it, and a profile that breaks them can be suspended;
  • the right primary category, plus relevant secondary ones;
  • a precise address — in Cameroon, with the landmark everyone knows — and real opening hours, public holidays included;
  • a phone number that gets answered;
  • authentic photos: shopfront, team, completed work;
  • services listed one by one, each with a short description;
  • real customer reviews, requested after every job, and answered.

Keep the same name, address and phone number everywhere: profile, website, social media. An address written three different ways sows doubt.

2. WhatsApp Business: reply fast, and measure how fast

If your customers already message you on WhatsApp, treat it as a sales channel in its own right, not as an afterthought to the phone.

The WhatsApp Business app is free to download. It gives you a business profile (address, email, website), lists to organise your contacts and chats, and tools to automate some messages and reply quickly; it also lets you show your products and services in a catalogue displayed on your profile.

The main gain is not automation: it is response time. We have no universal figure to give you. Measure yours, then compare the share of enquiries that become sales when they were answered within the hour versus the next day. If you track only one indicator, track that one.

3. A website that answers questions instead of introducing you

A visitor is not looking for your history. They want to know: do you do this, what does it cost, and how do I reach you?

A website that converts has, at minimum:

  • one page per service, with a title that uses the words people actually search for;
  • an indicative price or range in FCFA, which answers many visitors’ first question;
  • visible contact details on every page, with a clickable WhatsApp link;
  • a short form: every extra field is a reason to give up;
  • decent mobile speed, which you can test for free with PageSpeed Insights.

On mobile bundles sold by volume, a heavy site literally eats your visitor’s data. Performance is a commercial issue; the Core Web Vitals explain which thresholds matter.

4. Local SEO: being found for what you really do

Relevance. One page per service and per city you genuinely serve. An “IT maintenance in Douala” page describing your real work beats ten copied pages for ten cities you never visit: Google counts those pages among its spam practices and can rank them lower.

Distance. You do not control it, but you do control the accuracy of your address.

Prominence. According to Google, it rests in part on how many websites link to you and how many reviews you have. The links that count come from real sites: suppliers, partners, trade associations, local press, customers.

Google’s SEO Starter Guide remains the best free source, and LocalBusiness markup helps search engines read your details. On a bilingual site, every page should exist in both languages, linked to its translation with language annotations.

5. Diaspora customers: being found from Paris or Montreal

Some of your customers will never walk past your shop. A Cameroonian in Lyon having a computer delivered to his parents in Bafoussam, a family in Montreal looking for a school in Yaoundé, an owner in Brussels looking for someone to manage a building in Kotto.

When someone does not share where they are, Google uses what it knows about their location. From Paris, without the city name in the search, your profile is therefore unlikely to show. These customers type the city: “bilingual school Yaoundé”, “computer delivery Bafoussam”. Put the names of the cities you serve in your page titles and your service descriptions.

What reassures someone who cannot come and see:

  • real photos and a precise address, with a landmark;
  • prices in FCFA and what they include;
  • a WhatsApp number that answers, and a contact name;
  • a clear explanation of how to pay from abroad and how delivery or follow-up works;
  • pages in English too, for the diaspora in the UK, the US or English-speaking Canada.

6. Content that helps before it sells

Content that works answers a question your customers already ask, on the phone, every week. A simple rule: write down what you already explain for free. If you spend twenty minutes explaining to every prospect why a quote varies so much, that article already exists in your head, and it will save you those twenty minutes.

One useful article a month beats ten generic ones published in a week. It is also the kind of page Google’s AI answers can cite: our guide to Google AI Mode explains how to use it and get your business found.

7. Measure, or you are flying blind

Without measurement, any advertising budget is an expense, not an investment. The useful minimum:

  • Google Search Console, free: the searches you appear for, the pages indexed, the errors that block you;
  • privacy-respecting analytics, to see which pages generate contacts;
  • enquiry tracking: where each contact came from (Google, WhatsApp, word of mouth, diaspora). One column in a spreadsheet is enough to start;
  • the conversion rate from enquiry to customer, and the average time to first reply.

At the end of the quarter, the question is not “how many views?” but “how many customers, from where, at what cost?”

The order to follow

  1. A complete Google profile and real reviews
  2. WhatsApp Business, with a measured response time
  3. A website with one page per service and indicative prices
  4. Pages for each city you genuinely serve, in French and English
  5. Search Console and enquiry tracking
  6. Regular content on your customers’ real questions
  7. Only then, paid advertising

Advertising amplifies what exists. Amplifying a missing foundation means paying to send visitors to a dead end.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need a website if we already have a Facebook page?

Yes, for three reasons. You do not control a page hosted by a platform, and you can lose it. A social page ranks poorly for service searches. And a website allows one page per service and per city, which a news feed does not.

How long before SEO produces results?

Often several months for low-competition local searches, longer for contested terms. A Google profile, on the other hand, can produce calls much sooner, which is why it comes first.

Should we publish in French or English?

Both, if you serve both audiences, including the English-speaking diaspora. But with real, reviewed translations: a poor English version damages your credibility with the very audience it targets. Eight well-translated pages beat twenty approximate ones.

How do we reach diaspora customers?

By being findable on the city name and reassuring at a distance: real photos, a precise address, prices in FCFA, a WhatsApp number that answers, and a clear explanation of payment and delivery. Also share your useful pages in WhatsApp groups and associations of Cameroonians abroad.

What advertising budget should we start with?

None, until the foundation is in place. Then start small, on one offer and one area, measure the cost per real enquiry, and only scale what has proven its return.

How do we get reviews without buying them?

Ask every time, at the right moment: right after a successful job, with a short message containing the direct link. Never offer a discount in exchange for a review: it is prohibited. Reply to every review, negative ones included; a calm answer to criticism is reassuring.

Building your foundation

The useful starting point is a review: is your profile complete, are your contact details consistent, is your response time measured, and do your service pages match what people actually search for, here and abroad?

Update history

  1. Rewritten: three unsourced claims replaced by Google’s and WhatsApp’s own documentation, and a section on searches made from the diaspora.
  2. Rewritten: the Google listing and the WhatsApp response time come before advertising.

Only a change of substance moves the update date; a re-read with nothing to change moves only the “Checked” date. Something looks out of date? Tell us.
